ABOUT

the Miyaru programME is a MALDIVIAN NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION AND RESEARCH NETWORK DEDICATED TO COLLABORATIVE SHARK RESEARCH & CONSERVATION.

OUR OBJECTIVE:

Founded in January 2023, our objective is to conduct and support both interdisciplinary research and conservation initiatives focused on the shark species of the Maldives and wider Indian Ocean.

މިޔަރު

pronounced: [ MEE-YA-RUH ]

The word "Miyaru" means "shark" in Dhivehi, the national language of the Maldives, a country made up of 1192 coral islands that formed into 26 atolls. Our research programme was founded in the waters of this ocean nation.

Our name not only represents our dedication to the research and conservation of the understudied shark populations of the Maldives and beyond, but also our firm commitment to collaborative, transparent and inclusive research.

We strive to continue expanding as a research team that consists of at least 1/2 local and 1/2 international members to ensure sustainability and capacity-building on the ground.

OUR APPROACH

TO COLLABORATIVELY GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE ON SHARK SPECIES OF THE MALDIVES

We believe that together we can make more impact and prioritize projects that bring together multiple stakeholders and partners to better understand sharks.

TO BRING IN DIFFERENT AND INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES

We believe in diversity of thought and seek to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams that represent both local and international perspectives.

TO FACILITATE ACCESS TO RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIES AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

We believe in using new research technologies to learn more about sharks and in building skillsets, not just datasets during our projects.
