pronounced: [ MEE-YA-RUH ]
The word "Miyaru" means "shark" in Dhivehi, the national language of the Maldives, a country made up of 1192 coral islands that formed into 26 atolls. Our research programme was founded in the waters of this ocean nation.
Our name not only represents our dedication to the research and conservation of the understudied shark populations of the Maldives and beyond, but also our firm commitment to collaborative, transparent and inclusive research.
We strive to continue expanding as a research team that consists of at least 1/2 local and 1/2 international members to ensure sustainability and capacity-building on the ground.
